Obituary for Fred Johnson
Fred Johnson, Jr. passed away July 27, 2020 at the age of 75 of pancreatic cancer, in the loving arms of his wife, and the comforting support of his family and Chisholm Trail Hospice.
Cremation has taken place and a small family memorial is being planned thanks to the assistance of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral and Cremation Services in Marlow.
Fred was born January 2, 1945 in Lafayette County, Missouri. He grew to manhood inspired by the ruggedness and beauty of the great Rocky Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah where his parents Fred R. and Kathlyn Johnson built their home...After serving our country in Vietnam with his fellow veterans in the United States Army, he returned to make his home near those same mountains in Durango, Colorado where he raised a young family and retired after 33 years from Williams Brothers Refinery.
Fred chose to make his home in Oklahoma later in life to be near his younger sisters...Where he met his wife Carol, and cherished almost 20 years together before his passing.
Since early childhood, Fred had a great love for horses, and grew up where horses were an integral part of a rugged life...As he grew older, he took great pride in raising thoroughbreds for racing...And for grins, there were old westerns, country music, and of course, poker.
Survivors include, his wife, Carol Strickland of Lawton and family, sons, David and Charley Strickland, daughter, Jennifer Douglas, grandchildren, Steven Strickland, Caroline Strickland, Blake Strickland, John Strickland, Ellie Strickland, Justin Strickland, Brooke Strickland, Monroe Douglas, and Clive Douglas.
He is also survived by his brothers, Billy Johnson and wife Lirio and Jack Werner, of Oklahoma City...And his sisters of Marlow, Junetta Johnson Carter and husband Bob, Margie Johnson Forehand and husband Art, Sandra Johnson (listed in memory, husband Billie Neeld) as well as much loved nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, and older brothers Hugh Johnson of Wyoming, J.N. Johnson of Washington, Aubrey Johnson of Utah, and Bill Johnson of Oklahoma.
We will miss his kindness, his humor, his grateful attitude for life...his work ethic, his determination to follow his dream, eating beans and cornbread covered with catsup with him, and how much he loved us.
